The New Millennium | Y2K

2000 - 2006

48 The new millennium was ushered in with huge celebrations scheduled all over the globe however, many of these elaborate parties were not well attended as people stayed home fearing the worst from Y2K. The New Year arrived and we all survived with hardly a mention of Y2K. Since the beginning of this new millennium the changes that have taken place in our world, our country, our church and our homes are staggering.

In the few years since the turn of the century we have experienced unparalleled events and technological advances:

Katrina, Tsunami, Bird  Flu, Scars, Gay Marriages, Enron, TiVo, X-Box, Digital Cameras, Ipods, Harry Potter, The Da Vinci Code, Hybrid vehicles, blogs, My Space, reality shows, just to name a few. DVD’s replaced videos and Pluto was demoted from planethood. Al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, Iraq, Baghdad and Saddam Hussein were merely far away places and slightly familiar names in the 1990’s.

What did your cell phone look like in the early 90’s compared to the one you (and your children) own today. And, consider the differences in the internet and tech services.

Difficult Times Come Early in the Decade

49 As was true in past decades, these are troubled times. In 1941, our country was shaken by the events of December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. In 2001 we again were shaken by the events of 9/11. Like December 7, September 11 will go down as a day that will live in infamy.

Our church family came together to remember 9/11, to pray for the many who lost loved ones, to pray for wisdom for our country’s leaders and to commit ourselves to the ongoing task of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ to a troubled and hurting world around us.

4

Praying for Our Military

The Calvary Family also committed to pray for the men and women of Calvary Church, and their families, serving in our armed services. Large posters with their names and photos were placed in the Worship Center Lobby. Our College students mailed packages and letters and we all prayed.

About that time Rick Warren and Saddleback Church, just a few miles from Calvary, became known all over the world when his book, Purpose Driven Life, became number one on the best seller list and remained on the list year after year.

50Saying Goodbye

Here at Calvary we said goodbye to beloved long time leaders of Calvary Church, Paul Harvey, Bud Swanson and Lorin Griset, all of whom had faithfully served on the Missions Board, as Elders, Trustees, Adult Bible Fellowship teachers and Sunday School superintendents, (before the day of Adult Ministries Pastors).

These men served as leaders at Calvary since the days at Sixth and French Streets in the 1940’s.  We are grateful for their faithful legacy and look forward to a great reunion one day.

Chuck Obremski

6 We also said goodbye to Chuck Obremski, long-time Adult Bible Fellowship teacher at Calvary, and later Pastor of Kindred Community Church in Anaheim Hills. Chuck endured a battle with cancer, courageously preaching often while in pain. He concluded his series of messages on Heaven shortly before the Lord took him home and heaven became reality. Those of his congregation say they will never forget these messages and how much more real heaven is to them today.

Worship Center Mortgage Paid in Full

One of the most exciting days in the history of Calvary Church was the day the debt of the Worship Center facility was PAID IN FULL!

A celebration acknowledging that this was the Lord’s doing included the actual burning of the mortgage. This special service was held on Sunday, October 7, 2001 and remains a day that those in attendance will not soon forget. It had been a long ten year struggle. We continue to thank God for His provision in the complete payment of this enormous debt.

“This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.”  Psalm 118:23

Calvary Church Purchases Heritage Medical Building

Calvary Church had the opportunity in 1979 to buy the rest of the city block that the Heritage Medical Building and Western Radiology Building currently occupy, at the corner of Tustin Avenue and Wellington. The price was $350,000. Calvary did not have the financial ability to purchase the vacant land at that time. When this property became for sale again in the fall of 2004, the owner approached us and asked if we were interested in purchasing it. At that time the leadership of Calvary began to pray about it and pursue it as an option.

8

There were multiple offers on the building, but the owner of the property, being a church architect himself, was willing to sell to Calvary if we could come up with the $2.7 million quickly.

Several factors led the congregation to approve the leadership’s recommendation to purchase the building in the fall of 2004:

  • The building might not be available for purchase again for a long  time.

  • The price would undoubtedly be higher based on past experience.

  • The current rental leases pay for the operational expenses of the building.

  • The proximity of the land around the building could allow future expansion on our own campus.

  • We would have the ability to choose our neighbors

  45

Calvary Church took ownership of the property on March 31, 2005. Currently the operation of the building is paying its bills and the real estate is appreciating while the leadership works on plans for its future use.

Confident that God has given us this property to be used to carry on the work He has begun at Calvary, we look forward to what the future holds for the Heritage Building.

Calvary Christian School

10 Our school, with its commitment to excellence, is continuing to expand and upgrade its facilities. Class rooms are refurbished and new equipment is purchased on a regular basis. This fall the new science lab was added.

In addition to facility improvements, curriculum development is ongoing. Our school again received long term accreditation along with rave reviews from the examiners. The mission statement continues to be, “to train up Christian young people who will positively impact their world”.

We have a strong Parent Teacher Fellowship which has provided funds for many of the school upgrades and equipment. Most importantly, we have a talented and committed faculty and staff. Calvary Christian School began its 32nd year this fall with over 800 students enrolled.

The Orange Coast Magazine has called our school “one of the best private schools in Orange County”. The School is led by Mary Malyon, School Administrator; Gary Wright, Junior High School Principal; and Julie Trujillo, Elementary School Principal.

Calvary Christian Preschool

12Our Preschool is now “computer ready”. There is a computer in each classroom, as well as a computer lab. Our preschoolers love to print and take home their creations. (Yes, we are in the 2000’s.) Much of the funds for the computer lab were furnished by the Preschool Parent Teacher Fellowship. The PTF has also purchased items for the outdoor program and many upgrades for the class rooms.

Tina Holland, Preschool Director, says “We are fully staffed with highly qualified, dedicated teachers who are very creative in their teaching methods and who truly love ‘their’ children. Because of these dedicated teachers we are able to keep our enrollment full and carry a waiting list with very little advertising. We are blessed with teachers who have been teaching at our preschool for more than 20 years and several who have been on our staff for over ten years.”

5The preschool classrooms have been completely refurbished and the restrooms remodeled. In addition to the computer lab, new Bible and math curriculum have been developed.

Calvary is blessed to have a preschool that is recognized as one of the best in Orange County. It has been our privilege to share the love of Jesus with preschool children for the past 31 years.

Student Ministries

Student ministries entered the new millennium in full speed continuing annual events; camps at Hume Lake, Houseboat trips, ski trips, L.A. Urban Outreach, Mexico ministries and many short term missions trips.

16 18

26 28

Eric Wakeling joined the Calvary staff and has directed Student Ministries since 2002. Matt Doan serves as High School Pastor and Josh Simpson as Junior High Pastor. Josh Matlock has moved to Young Adults ministry turning the College ministry over to Brent Dedmon.

7

Student Ministries continues to be one of the most active ministries on our campus. Much of the success of the coordination of their many activities is due to Lois Chandler who has served as Administrative Assistant for the past 17 years. The student Ministries staff describes Lois with these words, “faithful, dependable, dedicated, gifted, efficient, patient, fun and indispensable”. They also mentioned that she is a great cook!

Children’s Ministries

Children’s Ministries kicked off the new millennium with Hungary 2000. This short-term missions trip to present a Vacation Bible School to children in Hungary was at the request of Hugi Aldridge, our former Nursery Coordinator. When Hugi’s church planting team began discussing summer plans for the children her response was, “I know just the team that can come help us”.

Debbie Rowley took the challenge and acted as team leader gathering supplies and training the team. With suitcases packed full of craft items, teaching aids and a myriad of supplies, the team left for Hungary. This exciting and fruitful trip was a first for Children’s Ministries. Who better to direct a short term VBS than our own Children’s Ministries team!

Faithful Hands Puppet Ministry

Calvary’s Faithful Hands Puppet Team is led by Harold Sorensen. The team has been together for several years and faithfully continues in this new decade sharing biblical truths through the medium of puppets.

13

Our preschool and early elementary classes have enjoyed the puppet team at special times during the year including Missions Conference, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas and of course they present the gospel in a unique and fun way at our Light the Night party each year. Their ministry is not limited to Calvary Church alone. They have taken their productions to convalescent homes, other churches and many children’s venues throughout Orange County.

Pastor Matt Davis Becomes Children’s Director

15 While completing his degree in Christian Education at Biola, Matt Davis came to Calvary as an intern in Children’s Ministries. Suzanne Jensvold observed him interacting with our kids at Indian Village (where he was on staff) and came back saying “you’ve got to get this guy for our children’s intern.” Matt began working with our 5th and 6th graders and developed The Bridge ministries… and the rest is history.

Since coming to Calvary, Matt has acquired a wife, a baby boy, and another degree. When Geri Templeton planned to retire as Children’s Director, Matt was the ideal choice to fill the position.

New Ministries in the 2000’s

Freedom in Recovery

30 In January 2002, Calvary Church started a new ministry called Freedom in Recovery. Freedom in Recovery (FIR) is a ministry to the hurting and broken people of our church and community. Important elements of this ministry include healing from the past, restoration of present relationships and new perspectives for the future.

Weekly meetings begin with a time of worship through song and music provided by Mike Stand and band. Sound biblical truth is presented in addition to the twelve steps of recovery and education on specific areas of struggle. Open sharing follows in issue-specific groups led by a leader who has recovery experience in that particular area. The evening concludes with a time of fellowship and refreshments.

A number of people have come to a saving knowledge of our Lord through this ministry and many have found encouragement, hope and healing. Several FIR participants have joined Calvary and are now serving within Freedom in Recovery or in another ministry of the church.

46FIR is under the leadership of Elder, Mike Tafoya, and Renate Schnurr who joined the Calvary staff in 1999. Renate was a student at the German Bible Institute when she first came to Calvary as an intern in 1983. (Calvary missionaries John and Linda Crandall served at the German Bible Institute and introduced Renate to Calvary.) After receiving her Master’s Degree in Educational Ministries from Wheaton College, Wheaton IL, she returned to teach at the German Bible Institute for ten years before coming back to the U.S. to serve on our Calvary Church staff.

Biblical Counseling and Encouragement Ministry

17 The Biblical Counseling Ministry’s purpose is come along side the church body and other church ministries to partner with them and to assist those who desire spiritual, psychological, emotional and relational healing. Lay counselors have been trained and supervised to assist with this ministry which has provided over 1,500 counseling sessions to the church family and as many as twenty-five other churches. This ministry continues to grow and has impacted many through the care and passion of Dr. Martin Eaton, pastor of our counseling ministry.

Beach Baptisms

47 This new ministry at Calvary has been an exciting opportunity for many as baptisms are held each year at Corona del Mar State Beach each August.

This is in addition to the traditional baptism services that take place in the Worship Center on a regular basis throughout the year.

Several hundred have been baptized at Calvary since the beginning o this new decade, publicly sharing their faith in Jesus Christ and committing their lives to Him. This is always one of the most special events for the entire Calvary family.

Lighthouse Area Fellowships

Navigating through life together by the light of God's Word.

Since the inauguration of the Lighthouse Area Fellowship ministry on October 5, 2003, approximately 1,000 adults, youth and children have participated in this church-wide ministry. More than 60 multi-generational, geographically based groups, with 20-30 family units assigned to each group, were formed in the greater Orange County area to be God’s “light” to our communities. More than 100 lay leaders and church staff have served as Shepherds, Co-shepherds and Host Homes meeting every other Sunday evening.

Lighthouse Area Fellowships provided Calvary attendees the opportunity to meet others from Calvary in their neighborhood. Through these small groups every person at Calvary can enjoy a connection to a small, local body of believers.

The Bible application is based on Pastor Dave’s Sunday message and is intended to encourage interaction and discussion between group members for the purpose of challenging each member to apply the message. Through friendships established within a Lighthouse we strive to support one another through prayer and practical involvement in each others’ lives, and to reach out to unbelievers in our neighborhoods.

The goal is to Shepherd and account for every person that calls Calvary their church home. With God’s help we continue to strive for this goal.

Calvary Church Begins New Worship Service January 2006

In this new millennium it has become evident that people desire choices. Being a multi-generational church, it became evident in the early 2000’s that Calvary was not providing choices for that which we value most…that of worship. After much prayer and planning by our Pastors and Elders the Elevation service began on January 7, 2006 offering a choice of two distinct styles of worship on Sunday mornings.

Celebration

  • A dynamic blend of hymns and praise songs led by our Celebration choir, singers, band and orchestra.
  • Relevant Bible teaching with helpful illustrations through storytelling, video and drama.
  • An opportunity to respond to the experience by meeting with a prayer counselor or pastor.
Pastor David Mitchell Celebration Choir Pastor Ron Rogalski

Elevation

  • Passionate music in a modern style led by our Elevation band.
  • Teaching that uses creative expressions of biblical truths
  • Response opportunities using times of “sacred space”,prayer and interaction with the biblical passages taught.
Elevation Victor Estrada Elevation Worship

As we look to the next 75 years there will undoubtedly be more changes in style and preference for worship however, our vision will remain….to worship our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.

Bob Foyle John Sherman Phil Christopherson

Celebrate 25 Years at Calvary

Bob Foyle

21 Bob Foyle, a native of Philadelphia, PA is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and served his country as a naval officer for six years. Our Calvary Christian School 8th graders, on their annual Washington DC trip, toured the academy at Annapolis, MD. Imagine their surprise when they saw Pastor Foyle’s picture and name in the academy’s Hall of Fame, R.C. Foyle class of 1962.   (Bob was captain of the baseball team.)

Bob came to Calvary after a 15 year career as a junior high teacher at South Junior High in Anaheim where he taught math. He was well liked by his students because of his “unusual” sense of humor.
And, he was a great teacher.

19Bob met his wife, Connie, at Disneyland…“The happiest place on earth.” They have three daughters and a son, Jackie, Jennie, Julie and Bob. Jennie teaches junior high math at Calvary Christian School.

Bob and Connie came to Calvary in 1978. Bob served as an elder and representative to the Children’s Ministries Board. The Lord significantly used Pastor Fred Morse and Calvary Missions Ministry in leading Bob to attend Talbot Seminary, where he completed a Master’s of Divinity in 1986. This was when Bob joined the Calvary staff and served as Missions Pastor for several years. In the early 90’s Bob became our Adult Ministries Pastor allowing him to participate more frequently in teaching God’s Word in classes and small groups.

32

Bob and Connie are big supporters of all Calvary ministries, volunteering and serving in outreach programs as well as the ongoing ministries of the church.

The Calvary family is grateful to Pastor Foyle for his faithful and consistent ministry at Calvary for the past 28 years.

John Sherman

23 In the decade of the 60’s the Lyle Sherman family joined Calvary Church (At 6th and French) with their daughters, Mary and Martha, and young son John. Well, young son John is our own Pastor John Sherman now celebrating 45 years as part of the Calvary Family. John remembers those first Sundays in the 5th grade Junior Department with Evelyn Grant as his Sunday School team leader. John says, “She had a great impact on my life”. John’s father, Lyle, served as an Elder, School Board Chairman, adult Sunday School teacher, Missions Board Chairman and usher. His Mom, Ruth, taught many women’s Bible studies and as an accomplished musician played the piano at various services of the church. She often provided special music on the marimba as well. John’s sisters, Martha and Mary also grew up and served at Calvary; Martha as one of Calvary’s missionaries. (Mrs. Christian Bastke)

25In his teens, John served at Vacation Bible School where his mother suggested to the VBS leaders that it would be good if he would be used to teach and not just placed in athletics.

It was while in college that John met and fell in love with Leslie Johnson, (daughter of Calvary members June and Lester Johnson). He asked her to go to a college banquet. She said “No, I can’t go, but could I have a rain check?’ John and Leslie were married at Calvary Church on December 11, 1976. Leslie currently teaches at Calvary Christian School.

35 On April 1, 1984 John became College Pastor at Calvary. Since that time he has served as pastor in many areas: Homeless Ministry, Athletics, Senior Adults, Membership and Assimilation.

When John had knee replacements on both knees in 2002, he gained a further empathy for those with handicaps and physical struggles.

John graduated from Biola University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Education. (and played basketball) He received his teaching credential from Chapman University and his Master of Divinity from Talbot Seminary.

John and Leslie have four children: Joshua, Lindsey, Katelyn and Micah. They are all actively involved at Calvary.

Phil Christopherson
aka Mr. C

38 It was the year Calvary Christian School began that a young student teacher by the name of Phil Christopherson was employed by Gordon Kroeker as a custodian and began his school career cleaning the school facilities. Phil had graduated from Northwestern College in St. Paul Minnesota, attended Vanguard University, and was doing his student teaching at Santa Ana Valley High School.

Phil had quite an illustrious athletic career while attending Northwestern; he ran cross country, and was All-American in both basketball and track two consecutive years.

29

While at Calvary he met and married Becky Landahl, one of the Landahl girls. Jan, Mrs. Tex Schneider and Julie, Mrs. John Godoy are the other Landahl girls of Calvary Church.

31 Ready to begin his teaching career, Phil joined the staff of Calvary School in 1979 teaching science and Bible. Since then “Mr. C” has taught P.E., served as Athletic Director and Director of the Day Care program.

Phil started the school walk-a-thons and Hoop Camp which he directed each summer for 13 years. In 2006 he turned this program over to the very capable Joshua Sherman.

For the third year in a row Phil is listed in the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. These teachers must be recommended by an honor student who feels that a particular teacher has influenced his life. Phil has influenced many young lives in his 27 years at Calvary School.

Phil and Becky have two daughters; Patty and Katie. This year Patty became Mrs. Brent Dedmon and started her first year of teaching at Calvary School. Becky serves as Social Director at Town and Country Manor.

Suzanne Jensvold

39 Suzanne Jensvold served at Calvary for more than 20 years before leaving Calvary to serve at Olive Crest Homes and Services for Abused Children.

Suzanne served on the Children’s Ministries staff as our first Preschool Coordinator. Through the years Suzanne served not only in the preschool area, but helped start our Children’s Resourse Center, served as Coordinator for the Elementary Ministries and Wednesday Night Club activities and later as Special Services and Events Coordinator. Following the completion of the Worship Center Suzanne did much to shape our Vacation Bible School and coordinated the Unhalloween Party (now Light the Night) for many years.

Suzanne is from a family that is no stranger to service. She is the daughter of Gerry and Norma Bauer who have served at Calvary Church since their arrival in Orange County in 1966. Suzanne’s
husband David is involved in the drama ministries and served with Suzanne in all areas of Children’s ministries.

We are grateful to Suzanne for her many years of service at Calvary.

Missions in the 2000’s

Missions has always been a vital part of Calvary Church. Since 1932, a total of 234 families have been “sent” out as career or extended short term (1-3 years) Calvary missionaries, with a total of almost $30 million dollars given by Calvary Church to missions. Hundreds more individuals have gone on short term (up to three months) trips and thousands of additional mission dollars have been given through our Thanksgiving and other special offerings. Missions is Calvary Church and this decade of the 2000’s has been no exception.

In early 2000, Missions Director Liz Gold, with the Missions Ministry Team presented Vision 2005 – the mission vision and goals for Calvary Church over the next five years. The concern for a plateau in missions giving, the seemingly lack of understanding by our congregation of their personal part in reaching the lost and a leaning towards the belief that “we do missions at Calvary Church to just support our missionaries” led to Vision 2005. Amazing things have happened in the years since. God has worked in accomplishing not only what was planned, but so much more than could ever have been imagined.

As we continued with our commitment to our current missionary families, both in care and financial support, we also increased our opportunities for missions around the world by partnering with ministries serving in the least reached people groups (mainly in the area known as The 10/40 Window). Through these partnerships,
we discovered that we were able to multiply our effectiveness and efficiency in reaching the lost. Additional opportunities for our own people to go on short term trips through our STORM (Short Term Out Reach Ministry) teams and encouragement in serving individually resulted in more people going than ever before.

Some of the results of Vision 2005 have been:

  • Missions giving went from $998,000 in 1999 to $1,218,400 in 2006

  • As we partnered with agencies, over $300,000 was given internationally toward Bible translation, printing and publications, radio broadcast, national missionary support, educational scholarships to nationals, care and training for abused and neglected women and children, financial help to families whose husbands/fathers had been imprisoned for their faith, motorcycles for national church planters, 40 tons of rice for Cambodians, computers and school equipment, camp beds, goats for Masi pastors families for food multiplication.

  • STORM teams and individual summer missions boomed as our congregation enthusiastically engaged in the opportunity of going themselves. A total of 404 individuals participated in trips. This included 26 STORM trips and over 60 individual trips from two weeks to three months in nearly 30 countries.
STORM teams also sent several individuals to help with Hurricane Katrina. More than $100,000 in special offerings went to support Katrina victims and the victims of the Tsunami in Indonesia.

  • Our Understanding World Religions classes covered all major religions and had 421 participants.

  • An additional 19 Calvary missionaries were added to our missionary family during this period.

Other accomplishments since 2000 include:

  • Our Missions Policy was researched and re-written to be in line with more current mission thinking and agency objectives.

  • A Short Term Missions Manual was written to assure consistency in training on all of our STORM trips.

  • Establishment of our Hispanic and Chinese Ministries, which provides for worship services in Spanish and Mandarin.

  • World S.P.I.N. (Sending People Into the Nations) meetings began with 28 college and young adults attending the first meeting.

The Missions Ministry Team during this time included the following: Liz Gold, Bill Shuffield, Harold Stephens, Paul Holsted, Karen Ottoson, Paul Nienow, Lynn Ahern, Chuck Ball, Randy Williams and Mark Zwirner.

As Calvary Church looks towards the next 75 years, may God continue to bless us as we continue our commitment in sharing His message of salvation around the world!

Hispano Ministerio – Spanish Worship Hispanic Ministry

41

Every Sunday morning, and throughout the week, Hispano Ministerio meets for worship and the study of God’s Word for Spanish speaking people. As they began meeting here in 2001, they desired to become a ministry of Calvary Church and most of those attending have completed Calvary’s membership class, taught in Spanish.

34 Pastor Armando Reyes is involved in all aspects of their ministry. As a staff member of Calvary Church, Armando attends Calvary pastoral staff meetings to stay connected with the ministries of Calvary Church. Armando and his wife, Rocio, are proud parents of two little boys, Nehemias and Nathan. The Hispanic ministry also has Mesa Directiva (Elders), one of whom (Edwin Benavente) was affirmed in May 2004 to serve on Calvary’s Elder Board, to insure a vital connection with the English speaking church. Currently their Sunday morning worship attendance averages over 200 adults. Their children attend Calvary Sunday School classes in English. Various Bible studies are held throughout the week. They are very active in outreach to the neighborhood and have an Awana ministry on Friday nights specifically planned to reach un-churched Hispanic children.

Logos Bible Church
– Mandarin Worship Chinese Ministry

In August 2004, Logos Bible Church started services at an industrial warehouse site in Orange. The church has since grown from four, Vincent and Huey Chan and Andy and Amy Chao, to over 70 adults. Vincent and Andy are elder teachers in the new church. Evangelistic in their approach, a special invitation barbeque in the park attracted unbelievers, who came to Christ after hearing the Good News shared.

43

A desire to expand Mandarin language services to the north county area was important in Vincent and Andy’s decision to form a new church. As the church grew, the desire for a place where their children could take part in English services, as well as a facility better equipped to accommodate the expected new attendees became very important.

42In early 2005, the Logos Bible Church approached Calvary about possibly meeting here for their Mandarin speaking services. We were excited to welcome them to the campus on Sunday, June 5, 2005. They have an Adult Bible Fellowship class meeting at 8:45 a.m. with their Worship service in the Gym at 10:45 a.m. They also have Bible study classes on Friday evenings. Each week they gather together for lunch in the Gym following their Sunday morning worship.

Why Look Back?

“Write this in a book as a memorial” (Exodus 17:14)

There is a sense in which we, as Calvary Family, need to look back as well as forward. We need a time for remembering the power and faithfulness of God in times of past difficulties and crisis. Answered prayers should always be remembered.

How quickly we forget the blessings, the miraculous deliverances, the gracious provisions of today and yesterday. How soon they are forgotten in our concern for the problems which seem to press right now or threaten to press tomorrow.

May we never forget the daily mercies of God. Trusting will come more or less easily in proportion to how well we remember to remember.

May Calvary Church always be known for its commitment to Bible teaching, evangelism, missions and as a place where God is honored.

That they may know that this is Your hand - that You, LORD, have done it! To God Be The Glory, Great Things He Has Done.
