BIBLE

TEXT: Bible Truths: A Servant’s Heart

This course covers:
God – how He rules creation, nature, families and me
How to be obedient
How to have a humble heart
Christ’s birth
How to serve God
How to have courage
How to forgive
Easter
Jesus is the Messiah
How to live for Jesus
Students will also memorize Bible verses, the books of the Bible, and various character traits.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

TEXT/SOFTWARE Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, Ver. 11 (Mindscape)
Kid Pix 3 (Broderbund)
Microsoft Word (Microsoft Corp.)

Students receive a half-hour of instruction once a week in the computer lab. Students develop typing skills using the software Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, with speed drills and emphasis put on accuracy. Students use Kid Pix Studio Deluxe which develops their creative skills, hand/eye coordination and logic applications through art. Computer hardware and software in relation to the network is explained. Second semester students learn MS Word toolbar functions and continue to re-familiarizing themselves with the keyboard.
Academic

ENGLISH

TEXT: English for Christian Schools (Bob Jones University Press, 2003)

Students will be challenged in parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, present and past tense. Synonyms, homonyms, antonyms, punctuation, complete sentences, story writing, letter writing, and poetry will also be presented.

SPELLING

TEXT: ACSI Spelling Series (ACSI)

New words, recognizing sight words, word usage, vocabulary, and dictionary skills will be covered in Grade 2.

READING / PHONICS

TEXT (Reading): Reading for Christian Schools (Bob Jones University Press)
- Books 2-1, 2-2 (Including Workbooks 2-1, 2-2)
(Phonics): Phonics B (Modern Curriculum Press)

Students will learn comprehension, drawing conclusions, recalling sequence of events, interpreting figurative language, reality and fantasy, time relationships, rhyming words, predicting, developing opinions, comparing and contrasting, and understanding context clues. Vowels, consonants, blends, contractions, prefixes, suffixes, and compound words will be taught.

MATHEMATICS

TEXT: California Mathematics (Scott Foresman)

Students will learn single, double, and triple digit addition, subtraction, regrouping, beginning multiplication, measurement, time, money, and graphing, place value to 1,000, geometry, fractions. Students will also be introduced to the metric system.

SCIENCE

TEXT: Science (Houghton Mifflin)

Motion and forces (magnets and objects in motion)

SOCIAL STUDIES

TEXT: Some People I Know (Houghton Mifflin)

Students will be introduced to community helpers, depending on others, consumers, ancestors, family traditions, American government, American holidays, citizenship, people who make a difference (Louis Braille, Eleanor Roosevelt, Thomas Edison), basic map skills.

MUSIC

Grades K-6 have music classes each week with the music teacher. Students are introduced to classical music, composers, instruments, hymns and hymn writers, folk music, and basic theory at each grade level. Instrumental music, choir, and fine art electives are offered beginning at 4th grade. Drama, instrumental music, and vocal music are offered as Jr. High elective classes.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical education is a vital, integral part of Calvary Christian School curriculum. There is emphasis in the areas of running, jumping, catching, listening, and sportsmanship. Academic Overview Revised 1/28/2008 Grade 2
