KINDERGARTEN ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

 

BIBLE

TEXT: New International Version

A Beka Book Bible Visuals K5 Bible Truths for Christian Schools

The students will be introduced to the following:
God’s Word, God’s World (Creation), God’s Love, God’s Friends, God’s Helpers, God’s Leaders, God’s Care, God’s Gifts (Thanksgiving), God’s Best Gift (Christmas), God’s Son, God’s Workers, and Talking to God (Prayer). Students will memorize verses 1-26 from the Bob Jones curriculum and be introduced to Christian Character Traits (one per month).

ORAL & WRITTEN LANGUAGE

TEXT: Various books and pictures

Students will dictate stories weekly and create a picture to accompany their stories.

PENMANSHIP

TEXT: Learning to Read, Write, and Listen (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill)

Students will learn the correct formation of the letters of the alphabet.

PHONICS / READING

TEXT: Learning to Read, Write, and Listen (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill – Reading)

Students will learn the alphabet, all letter sounds (short vowels), and blend three and four letter words. Students will read short books at the end of the year. Students will memorize Kindergarten sight words.

MATHEMATICS

TEXT: Math Their Way (Addison-Wesley)
California Mathematics (Scott Foresman)

Students will work with manipulatives to learn patterning, sequencing, classifying, comparing and numbers 1-30. They will also learn addition facts to 10 and be introduced to subtraction. They will count to 100.

SCIENCE

TEXT: Science (McMillan McGraw-Hill)
Project AIMS (AIMS Education Foundation)
Teacher Created Lessons

Students will learn to estimate, graph, count, and predict by doing simple science lessons.

SOCIAL STUDIES

TEXT: My World (Houghton Mifflin)
Various books and pictures

Students will learn about God's world.

MUSIC

Grades K-6 have music classes each week with the music teacher. Students are introduced to classical music, composers, instruments, hymns and hymn writers, folk music, and basic theory at each grade level. Instrumental music, choir, and fine art electives are offered beginning at 4th grade. Drama, instrumental music, and vocal music are offered as Jr. High elective classes.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical education is a vital, integral part of Calvary Christian School curriculum. There is emphasis in the areas of running, jumping, catching, listening, and sportsmanship.
